Misthaven Valley woke slowly. Morning mist curled between rooftops as sunlight spilled like honey over the river. Across the water stood the oldest structure in the valley — an ancient stone bridge.

Beneath that bridge lived Grumble. Grumble the Troll was enormous, with moss-green skin, vine-like hair, and shoulders like boulders. But despite his size, he was gentle. Every morning he swept leaves from the bridge for the villagers.

That morning, however, something was wrong. “HHH—HHRRRAAASHOO!” Grumble’s sneeze echoed like thunder beneath the bridge.

The bridge shook. Dust sprinkled down into the river. Villagers froze mid-step as another sneeze followed. “HHH—RAAAASHOO!” A crack zigzagged across one of the bridge stones.

“Ember!” someone shouted. “Go fetch the dragon vet!” But Ember was already running. She skidded to a stop at the edge of the bridge, her satchel bouncing at her side.

This was Ember’s moment. Her first big case without her grandmother beside her. Beneath the bridge, Grumble sniffed miserably. “My nose feels like bees live inside it,” he groaned.

Ember hurried down to examine him. She checked his eyes. Clear. His breathing. Strong. His arm. No fever. So why was Grumble sneezing?

Maybe it was magic. Ember raised her hand and traced a quick diagnostic spell. Blue sparks fizzed around her fingers. But before she finished— “HHHRRRAAASHOO!” The magic fizzled out.

The bridge groaned again. Ember stepped back and tried to think. Then she noticed something strange. Tiny golden flecks drifting lazily through the sunlight.

The golden dust swirled around Grumble’s nose. His eyes watered. Another sneeze began to build. Ember stared at the drifting particles and whispered, “What are you?”
